Individual Tarts Simple Appetizers

Individual tarts are a simple and impressive way to make a delicious appetizer for any occasion. They are fun to make and the whole family can take part in picking out the ingredients to fill them with. Real Food Real Kitchens brought together our 'family' in the kitchen and everyone got to choose their own ingredients. We had apples, cheeses, spinach, raisins, different kinds of spices, and more to choose from.

While there are a plethora of both sweet and savory ingredients to fill them with, the most important and most simple part is the crust. We decided to use I Can't Believe It's Not Butter!® Deliciously Simple™ to craft our flaky, melt in your mouth, shortcrust pastry shells. This new spread has a creamy, buttery taste and is made with simple ingredients like non-fat yogurt and vegetable oil. It has 100% Taste. 0% Artificial Preservatives.

You only need four ingredients to make your shortcrust pastry shells: plain flour, I Can't Believe It's Not Butter!® Deliciously Simple™, a pinch of salt, and cold water.

8 oz plain flour

4 oz I Can't Believe It's Not Butter!® Deliciously Simple™

Pinch of salt

1 tbsp cold water

In a medium bowl mix together your flour, Deliciously Simple™, and salt. The best way to do this is by using your finger tips until the mixture resembles cupcake sprinkles or course sea salt. Work quickly so it does not get warm.

Slowly add your cold water using a spoon to stir the mixture until dough binds together. If you need more water add a teaspoon or less at a time. Wrap your dough in plastic wrap and chill for 15 to 30 minutes while you prepare your fillings.

When you are ready to create your mini pastry shells:

Unwrap the dough and roll into an evenly thick, tube shaped roll and cut in to 6 equal parts. Flatten each part and form directly in to a non stick individual tart pan or use a non-stick muffin pan (be sure to fill your empty muffin compartments with water before baking).

Next fill each tart with your choice of ingredients (we made four different kinds and have listed the ingredients below).

Pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees. Place tarts in the oven and cook for approximately 20 minutes. Check regularly, your crust will begin to brown slightly when they are almost ready. Remove tarts from the oven and let cool for about 15 minutes.

Tarts should easily come out of your non-stick muffin pan or can be served directly in the individual tart pans.

The most fun part about making tarts is all of the different fillings you can put in them. Sweet or savory... it doesn't matter, just be creative. We ended up with four different combinations of ingredients for our fillings. Be sure to cut up the larger ingredients (like apples or pears) into small cubes to fit in to the individual tarts.
