Bake Ziti is definitely not in our family repertoire... but we got a serious hankering for some this past week. Since we are always up for a recipe challenge, we put our test kitchen Chef to work and he came up with this amazing recipe for baked ziti that really hit the spot! Amazing!
This definitely takes some time to prep then of course bake, but you can taste the goodness in each and ever bite. We now want to challenge you to a baked ziti bake off, send us your recipe with photos and we will share them right here.
Time: 1 hour
Serves: approximately 6
12oz. ground beef or vegetarian crumbles
26.46oz. of Dei Fratelli finely chopped tomatoes
3 - 4 Tbsp. olive oil
3 gloves of garlic minced
1/2 chopped onion
1 tsp. sea salt
1 tsp. chopped basil
1lb ziti (cooked to box instructions)
15oz. whole milk ricotta cheese
8oz. mozzarella cheese grated
2oz. grated Romano cheese
In a medium sauce pan add olive oil and bring to a medium heat.
Add garlic and onion, cook until onion is translucent. Add beef or crumbles and until beef is browned or for about 10 minutes.
Add chopped tomatoes, salt, and basil basil. Bring to a slight bubble, reduce heat and let simmer while you prepare the rest of the ingredients, stirring occasionally.
Cook ziti as instructed on the box.
Mix ricotta cheese in a medium bowl and if desired, add seasonings. We added about a tsp. of seal sat, some pepper, and some basil.
In a 9 x 13 non-stick baking dish, layer your ingredients. We put down a layer of sauce, then pasta, ricotta cheese, mozzarella, then sauce again, pasta, ricotta cheese, mozzarella, then the final topping was the grated Romano cheese.
Pre-heat oven to 350degrees. Bake on middle rack for 45 minutes.
Let cool some and enjoy. This recipe should make enough for approximately 6 servings.
