Summertime is the best time of year for many reasons.... The beach, the sun, a nice break from school, vacations to far away places, days in the park.... But our most favorite part of summer are the movies!
Now well in to the Summer Blockbuster season, we still have a few great GIANT Blockbusters to come: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Into the Storm, Sin City... and also a slew of indie greats like Begin Again, Boyhood, Wish I Was Here... One of our favorite things about spending a too hot summer day in a dark cold theater submersing our mind into the creative world of movie makers and storytellers is... POPCORN!!!
Nothing can replace the warm buttery taste of movie theater popcorn, many have tried but there's nothing like the real thing. However this summer we have curated a select few popcorn delights, and one traditional recipe to make your own popcorn, that bring a unique twist to your traditional movie theater popcorn. Not that we're encouraging sneaking any outside food in to your local theater (they definitely rely on your support), but these might be good for say a movie night at home :)
Gaslamp provides three different flavored, fluffy and delightful, All Natural popcorns: White Cheddar, Cinnamon Caramel, and out favorite, Kettle Corn. Once we broke the seal on these three fantastic popcorns they were gone in minutes! We are still craving the salty sweet goodness of their Kettle Corn Flavor.
POPART GOURMET POPCORN
PopArt has the most expansive, color and creative flavors of popcorn we could find. Imagine taste bud blowing flavors like: Thai Coconut Curry, Tandori Yogurt, Rosemary Truffle, and Nori Sesame to name a few. The packaging is equally as colorful as their flavors, each bag is a true work of PopArt deliciousness.
When you're a little punk rock around the edges like we are, the perfect snack to pair with the perfect beer at the cinema is a must! Welcome Hornie Corn, the non-GMO, zero trans fat, Gluten Free popcorn that has an ass kickin' spice combination sprinkled throughout. Fiery, peppery, and smokey are just a few adjectives to describe Hornie Corn's unique flavor, a love it or hate combo that's a must try.
STOVE TOP POPCORN POPPING AT HOME
To pop popcorn on a range-top, assemble the following:
- A 3 to 4 quart pan with a loose lid that allows steam to escape
- At least enough popcorn to cover the bottom of the pan, one kernel deep
- 1/3 cup of oil for every cup of kernels (Don't use butter!)
Heat the oil to 400 - 460 degrees Fahrenheit (if the oil smokes, it is too hot). Test the oil on a couple of kernels. When they pop, add the rest of the popcorn, cover the pan and shake to evenly spread the oil. When the popping begins to slow, remove the pan from the stove-top. The heated oil will still pop the remaining kernels.
Pre-salting kernels toughens popcorn. So, salt the popcorn after it has been popped -- or skip salt altogether and add salt-free spices.
General Measure Rule
One (1) ounce of un-popped popcorn equals a quart popped.
