Blue Apron Review

Grilled Goat Cheese & Plum Jam Sandwiches with Ednive & Marinated Cucumber Salad

Subscription boxes, monthly gift boxes, food delivery, food co-ops... the systems for all of these have been in place for years now. There is a monthly subscription box for just about every niche interest out there: fashion, beauty, comics, toys.... and more specifically for our situation, FOOD! So, we were thinking, why haven't we tried any of these food delivery boxes before? It's sort of in our job description right?

We mostly just figured they were out of our budget. We like to live what we preach so aiming to live on a few dollars a day is always our goal. But realistically, everyones grocery budgets are different, and sometimes convenience trumps price. Some folks would like even if for just a few nights a week to have a delicious, healthy meal for themselves and / or their family in under 30 minutes. So when our friends gifted us a week of Blue Apron meals, we jumped on it!

We opted for the following: three meals, vegetarian, two people. This comes at a price of about $60 which includes shipping, all your needed ingredients, and really simple to follow, step by step recipe cards for each meal. On our menu for the week was: Sweet Corn & Tinkerbell Pepper Pizza with Fontina Cheese & Baby Kale, Grilled Goat Cheese & Plum Jam Sandwiches with Ednive & Marinated Cucumber Salad, and Fresh Pappardelle Pasta with Summer Tomato-Olive Ragu & Ricotta Salata. The food arrived fresh, on time, and packaged really well in recyclable / eco-friendly materials.

Night one we made the Grilled Goat Cheese sandwiches, at first it sounded eh, ok... but these sandwiches and the salad were amazing! Each ingredient was perfectly proportioned and we even got to make the jam from scratch! The best discovery of all that night was that it was easy to make and we actually had fun in the kitchen together.

Night two we made the pasta, again incredibly simple and fresh and flavorful. Only one of us is a vegetarian and these meals were so good the meat eating half didn't even mention the 'no meat' factor once! (*note: Blue Apron does offer meat, seafood etc... and meals for all sorts of diets).

The final night was the pizza, again it seemed like an eh, ok option... but it blew up our tastebuds with flavor and is one we can't wait to make again! Delicious! We actually made the pizza a couple nights after the other two dishes and everything was still fresh and delicious, no need to make all the meals back to back.

Our final summary of our Blue Apron experience was that it was a fun, delicious, and an easy way to make dinner. It saved us time that was well spent together before, during and after our meal. We might not be able to subscribe regularly right away because of our grocery budget, but what you get for the price is actually really good. Don't forget that you're not just getting a quick, easy and healthy meal, but the surrounding perks of time together are equally valuable. We can't to try out other food delivery boxes in the coming months and give you our honest opinion right here on Real Food Real Kitchens.
